Description

Tamarind (Tamarindus Indica) is a highly valued exotic wood widespread in tropical regions.

The heartwood is dark reddish brown, sometimes with a purple tint – parts of the tamarind heartwood tend to be narrow and usually only occur in older and larger trees. It is rarely found on the market and only in small pieces.

The light yellow to white sapwood is very wide and sharply demarcated from the heartwood. Splintering (spalt) and other discoloration are very common in sapwood and most of the tamarind available is split sapwood.

Unlike most exotic woods, tamarind wood is non-toxic and does not emit any odor. From a processing point of view, tamarind is therefore completely safe to work with.

After impregnation with oil, it darkens slightly to a cream shade. Different types of natural oils have different effects on tamarind wood.

This is a popular wood for making furniture, for carving, turned objects and of course attractive handles.

The wood is strong and relatively durable, the specific gravity is similar to oak.

The block dimensions are 150 x 50 x 30 mm or more, the wood is dry.
