Custom knife - design and production

Why a custom knife?

A knife is one of the most intimate tools in a person’s hands. Each owner develops a relationship with his knife, and it is a certain expression of his personality. We have it encoded in our genes since prehistoric times.

In the old days, when there was no mass production, every knife was an original. Today, the vast majority of production is serial, and the owner is thus one of thousands. If you don’t want to be one of the many, you can have a knife made to order.

You can put your ideas about shape, materials and useful properties into a custom knife. The knife will become an expression of your personality.

What can you expect from me?

I make every custom knife and over-the-counter knives in an artisanal way, using only quality materials and best practices. I also make leather sheaths for knives, which can also be decorated with the classic leather stamping technique.

Making knives is my hobby, so I make each knife as if I were making it for myself.

First, I listen to the customer’s idea of how his custom knife should look. Then comes the drawing of the knife, fine-tuning of details and selection of materials. I have many different interesting materials in stock, but sometimes it is necessary to procure some specialties separately.

It is best if the customer can visit me in the workshop. This way, he can touch a lot of things live, and the choice is then easier. If the visit is not possible for any reason, it does not matter. Everything can be arranged by video call, phone and email.

The production of the knife to order then takes one to two months. If necessary, the deadlines can be shortened.

Custom knife manufacturing process

First, a rough outline of the future knife is created from annealed steel. The blank is either forged or cut from flat material.

This is followed by sharpening the final shape of the knife and creating a rough finish so that sharpening after clouding the steel is as easy as possible.

The blade then travels to the tempering furnace. After clouding, the material is tempered to the required hardness.

Tempering the blades gives it the final mechanical properties, but the knife still has a long way to go. It is necessary to make a final cut, clean the contours of the knife and make the desired surface treatment.

It’s starting to look nice now, but the handle is missing. For a mandrel knife, this means making a hole for the mandrel in the chosen material, sewing everything together and grinding it to the final shape. With a full-tang knife, it’s a little easier, you don’t need to gouge the hole, just cut out the inserts.

A separate chapter is the auspices or bolster. It is almost always done with a tang knife, with a full-tang knife it is a showpiece that has a place in more expensive knives. Anyway, it’s a lot of grinding.

Next comes the finishing of the wooden handle. Infusing with various oils, applying wax, grinding and polishing. The goal is to keep the handle looking nice and protected from moisture. This is not the case with synthetic materials.

The knife is almost done. All he has to do is measure the jacket and make the case. Leather is beautiful and smells nice, synthetic materials are cheaper and more resistant to moisture.

The last step is to sharpen the knife. The new knife is ready to go to its owner.
